Neonatal
units are highly technical places filled with
many items of equipment used to support the newborn.
The baby may initially be nursed in an incubator
in which their condition will be continuously
monitored. The unit staff will explain the machines
to the parents and will encourage their involvement
in the care and recovery of their baby.

NICU - High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV)
A method of mechanical ventilation used on babies who make no progress on conventional ventilation. Using supraphysiological breathing rates and smaller tidal volumes this method avoids large pressure and volume swings and minimises complications.
NICU - Ultrasound
A device for scanning babies, used to scan heads and sometimes their heart.
