Search engines

Altavista
One of the most popular and comprehensive web engines, created by Digital. It was the first engine to index more than 100 million web pages (today they are 550 million).

Google
It offers the most interesting search technology. Founded by two Stanford Ph.D. students, it offers more than 1 billion web pages. Even Yahoo uses Google a search basis for those sites that are not comprised in its index.

HotBot
The most colourful engine, it is also the most appraised by critics, thanks to the quality and efficiency of its web search results. Indeed HotBot offers a powerful and flexible advanced search technology, and a special Web crawler technology, called SmartCrawl, to streamline data collection and access the most current information on the Web. It can look at up to 10 million documents per day.

Lycos
Once considered one of the most popular search engines, its success has somewhat decreased in the last years.

Yahoo
It was the first-born search engine, and it is still the most popular one, and is also one of the world’s most visited Internet destinations. Actually it is not a search engine, but rather a “directory” of web sites (and not of single web pages) organised by subjects. Yahoo users can easily get a list of web sites organised by topics, according to their specific needs and interest.
