Nepu new school
4th of November 2004,

Two volunteers from the Association Lama Gangchen Help in Action ONLUS made the mission to Tibet during the July/August period.

During the period passed in Tibet the following activities, relative to the long-distance adoptions project in favour of children living in villages in the Shigatse region, were carried out.

Thanks to donations received from the Chiesi Group and Nycomed activities for the construction of an elementary school in Nepu Village and the planting of trees in the area surrounding the school were initiated.

Presently in this particular area, there is only one elementary school to serve the children from four villages. This school can accommodate approximately 40-50 children, whilst the youngsters of school age in the area are at least three times this number. Other than this, the area is also extremely arid and barren with few trees, which are considered an invaluable resource by the local population.

The general idea of the project was agreed upon beforehand with the local government representatives of the Dakshu Shang District in the Shigatse Region: during the mission further meetings were held between Italian and local representatives of the Association and the Local Government to define and finalise the working procedures for the realisation of the construction, which will be composed of three classrooms and an external courtyard.

Great value was attributed at all times to the possibility of realising a project so important for the education of children from the area, and local officials requested us to offer their sincere thanks to Chiesi Group and Nycomed, also in the name of the population who will benefit from their support.

Several visits to Nepu Village and the surrounding area were also carried out to determine the land most suitable for both the construction of the school and for the planting of trees, which preferably should be realised in the same area.

After examining the different possibilities the final choice was for a vast plot of land, located at the back of Nepu Village; separated from the village by a narrow canal it is easily reached from the village over a small stone bridge. The land is perfectly level and is sufficiently large to permit the planting of a considerable number of trees.

On this land there also pass the electricity pylons that connect the city of Shigatse to the city of Lhatse; at present none of the villages the electricity cables pass over are connected to it, but if in the future the Government decide to undertake this job then the school could easily be equipped with electrical lighting.

All parties were in approval over the choice of land, and the agreement was therefore concluded with the intent to begin the work as soon as possible; hopefully before the coldest winter months arrive during which it is not possible to work.

To begin the actual work, local representatives of the Association will take care of the selection and purchasing of materials from the city, of their transportation and the employment of workers: who will be people living in the poorest surrounding villages, who have already been employed and trained in other projects of the Association and who will clearly be happy of yet another possibility to work and earn a wage.

The planting of trees around the school will take place in the warmest season.
The local representatives of Lama Gangchen Help in Action will send information and keep us informed of the developments of the activities, and therefore it will be through the Association that Gruppo Chiesi e Nycomed will be kept informed.

Recently the volunteers of Lama Help In Action in Tibet informed that they have bought all the materials necessary to build school and are being delivered to Nepu Village. The weather in Tibet is already very cold and the ground is about to freeze, therefore, as foreseen, works will start in Spring 2005.
